Prolouge

The midnight blue sky was stuffed with stars. A luminous indigo pool was swimming with the small balls of icy fire, lighting it up and making it glow with hot ice. Reeds stood still in the still air, never moving.

A fern rustled as a slim tortoiseshell cat moved toward the pool, her eyes fixed on the starry surface. She dipped in a small paw, the surface of the water held still by an invisble figure. "Reveal," The cat whispered, sitting down neatly and curling her tail over her paws.

The water rippled, though the wind nor the cat was touching it. It swirled into a clear picture of a young cat sleeping gently, and the star on her otherwise perfect pelt glowed unnaturally. The picture faded as more cats poured out of the bushes, looking wide eyed and fearful.

"What did you see, Amberleaf?" A thin, wiry black cat hissed, his eyes clouded with fear. His shoulders were hunched, and his stood poised and ready to attack, like a snake.

Amberleaf closed her eyes. "A lone star shall save the Clans."

The words passed through the circle of cats warily, getting louder and louder each time it passed through. It was metallic and smooth; like a rock that was polished by hard waters. The chanting stopped when the she-cat opened her eyes.

A cat hissed, and all eyes turned to the pond. A red substance bubbled from the middle of the water, rippling thickly until it lapped at the rocks that surrounded it.

"Blood," The black tom growled. "For dark times lay ahead."

The cats scrabbled to their paws silently, and cleared away from the pond, leaving nothing but the tortoiseshell cat behind.

Chapter One

It was a normal morning in Greenleaf, the dazzling sun's golden light filtering through the branches of the trees and bathing the world below with a pale yellow light.

Rainpaw watched two squirrels jabber at eachother, arguing over who would get the the acorn under the roots of a large Oak tree. She dropped into a hunter's crouch, her mouth watering at the scent of the small mammal. She padded soundlessly forward, bunching her muscles when she was in range of pouncing. I've got you... She sprang, and then there was a flurry of squirrel and claws. One darted up the trunk of a tree, but the other was a little too slow and was caught in the apprentice's claws. She killed it with a swift slash to the neck.

"Shouldn't of waited to long," The teasing voice of Whitepaw chuckled, who leaped down from the branch of a Maple tree, holding a large robin by its tail feathers. Rainpaw's sister's eyes sparkled with amusment, but the white she-cat purred.

"Oh, and you were the one who said tou needed hunting lessons," Rainpaw meowed. She buried the squirrel in a shade of a large birch tree. She would come back for it later.

The cream she-cat moved away from her sister, scenting the air for prey. She crouched in the ferns when she saw a mouse scuffling through the undergrowth, nibbling at fallen seeds and berries.

She slithered forward, not noticing the Piegon just three mouse-lengths away from her. It gave an alarmed tweet and flew off in a storm of gray and white feathers, sending the mouse into a small hole at the base of a Dogwood tree. "Crowfood." Rainpaw arched her back in a long stretch, yawning.

"You mousebrain," Timberclaw padded to his apprentice, his large white paws making no sound on the earth floor. "How many times did I tell you to make sure there's nothing that will scare off your prey?" He cuffed her around her ears. "Come on," He mewed, "gather your prey and let's head back."

"Eugh.. You stink Mousepaw!" Rainpaw pinned back her ears and wrinkled her brow with disgust.

The brown apprentice shook herself. "That's what you get when you have to clean Foxleg's grubby pelt for ticks. He's got so many that I don't think I got half of them!" Mousepaw licked her chest fur. "It's Mousebile."

Rainpaw scolded herself for not knowing the terrible reek of the yellowish liqiud. Every apprentice had to search the Elder's fur for ticks once in a while, though none of them actually liked doing it. "Then you'll be on your way to the stream to wash your paws, then?"

Mousepaw nodded. "Yeah. See you, Rainpaw."

Rainpaw watched her friend walk out of camp before heading over to the Freshkill pile. She eyed a juicy vole and stuck out her paw to grab it.

She picked up the vole in her mouth and carried it into the Apprentice's den, flopping down in her nest. Her mouth watered when she sank her teeth into the small animal's flesh.

Rainpaw felt eyes boring into the back of her head. She looked over her shoulder, her gaze locking with Oakpaw's. He was always mad about something, but this time, the cold fire that burned in his eyes was even icier.
