Sparkling beams of light shot across the sky with the elegance of an awakening dawn as the indigo sky was used as a pedestal. Shimmering figures danced their way across the azure, gracefully swerving around the distant planets and encircling tiny stars with their trail of silver light. As their tails left grey threads below the clouds for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren alike to see, the smiles on their faces brightened the whole event. Even as shimmering starlight formed extravagant patterns in the sky, nothing could outshine their sparkling grins.
Slowly, each glowing cat trotted to a stop on a large electric blue cloud, spectrums magnified a thousand times in their diamond-esque pelts. As they settled into a large circle, a small ceremony of sharing tongues took place.
A silver tabby she-cat with faint blue eyes huddled up against a black tom, whose pelt shone the brightest out of the group. Together, they exchanged fleeting glances and meaningful stares that spoke words in a language only they understood. As other cats caught on to their moods, they shuffled away, leaving the two in an area of their own.
"You know, Gorsethorn," the silver tabby murmured in his ear, "I'm not sure about this. Haven't you seen what this cat has done? Lives have been cut short because of his existence..." She pressed her muzzle against his shoulder, purring excitedly.
"It is not his fault." Gorsethorn replied firmly. He shuffled away from his mate momentarily, then cast her a sympathetic glance as she struggled to comprehend his action. "Don't worry, my love. If all is well, this tom shall be a valuable addition to our ranks."
"You talk as if StarClan is an army!" the she-cat spat angrily. Her eyes sparkled not only with starlight but with a distant anger. "I am not just here to be your minion. I died for you, Gorsebrook. I hope you know that." She swiftly closed her eyes and turned her back on the tom. Before he could say another word, the cloud shone with silvery lights; the time was upon them.
From that moment on, everything was silent. Slowly, the shimmering began to multiply with the cloud, until a combined ball of energy lay floating in the middle of the circle of StarClan cats, bobbing slightly. Clearing his throat, Gorsethorn stepped forward.
"Cats of StarClan," he announced in a loud, formal voice, "this new addition to our ranks is an honour. May our families be enriched with joy down below, for their gift to us shall be rewarded greatly. Bow, my friends, and let this spirit be free to join us."
Every cat had rehearsed their lines, practicing every movement and action that was possibly involved. As one, they bowed to the ball of energy, bending forwards and letting their right paws slide in front of their heads. Pressing their noses to the dip of their paw, they waited for the signal to slide back up.
Gorsethorn continued, bowing himself. "Rise, my friends," he commanded, and watched as his friends all slowly slid back to their normal positions. He smiled despite himself; so many times had he performed this ceremony, and it never ceased to amaze him how graceful these cats were. "Let the energy be free!" he shouted.
The ball of energy expanded slightly, glowing with the rainbow. As it inflated, many StarClan cats twitched; once one has experienced a new privellege, they never truly grow to acknowledge it as a friend - it stays as the marvel it was when they first saw it. At last, the ball gave a small sigh - barely audible to living ears - and bubbled away to make a new form. The form of a feline.
Gently, the feline floated to the ground. His definite jaw scanned the area, and his eyes widened as he saw the shimmering cats around him. His lips parted to let a rasping gasp escape as he saw that he himself was sparkling like the stars.
"Welcome, new friend, to our dynasty. We bring you gifts of peace and unity within our ranks. Here is your new sanctuary; leave be with us what is unto yourself." Gorsethorn meowed profoundly, and smiled kindly. "Come closer, dear one."
The new tom stumbled forwards a few steps, struggling to find his footing on the almost unsensable layer of ground on a cloud. He padded towards Gorsethorn, who pressed his nose against the arrival's forehead. Smiling fondly at the tom, he nudged him towards a blue-grey she-cat who was beaming at them from the other side of the circle.
"Waterwhisker!" the tom breathed, and raced over to greet her. He rubbed his muzzle against hers, purring loudly. Every other cat watched their affection with loving eyes; they were all family here. "Oh, Waterwhisker, I missed you so! I'm so sorry for my mistakes... do forgive me, my love!"
The she-cat was purring just as loudly as the tom. "Harestretch, you know I'll always forgive you." She put on a brave face and smiled brightly; her emotions were well and truly hidden behind her mask of happiness. Behind it, uncertainty and faint memories lingered, haunting her mind and stalking her thoughts until they gave way to temptation and let the emotions in...
At that moment, she heard Gorsethorn softly calling her name. She obediantly trotted over, as the older cats had granted him leadership over this small party. He smiled welcomingly at her, then took her to the edge of the cloud. Together, they looked down over the distant forest as a couple.
"So, Waterwhisker," Gorsethorn began casually, "isn't it great having your mate back?" He purred as if to congratulate her, but inside his true emotions were clear; he wanted this she-cat to himself. The crush he'd held for her had gone on for too long - it was time she turned to him instead of the murderous tom she now felt infatuated for.
The she-cat sighed. "It would be - if he hadn't killed Isisclaw! I feel ashamed to see him by my side. Now, Isisclaw is lost in the dark forests of time, and I'll never see him again!" Waterwhisker wailed in despair. She glanced up at Gorsethorn, her eyes brimming with tears. "What can I do?"
"You would find a new mate," Gorsethorn said almost too quickly. He calmly looked down at the forest below, and imagined the Clan cats there; eating, sleeping, drinking like living beings... how he longed to be one of them once more. He recalled his days as the legendary deputy of ThunderClan, patrolling the land as she-cats swooned for him, and scaring away enemies with ease. He flinched as he remembered his death; four loner toms, all surrounding him, slowly approaching beneath the moonlight...
His eyes focused on the point where he had been killed, and he couldn't stop a tiny shudder from escaping him. He'd shown so much promise, so much potential... and as life skipped on without him, he was left behind to mourn over his loss.
It was at that moment that he realised Waterwhisker was shaking her head... what? She couldn't be rejecting his offer. It was impossible - she couldn't - she didn't still - what was she thinking? Gorsethorn watched in amazed silence as she slowly walked away from him. No she-cat had ever resisted him before - especially not when he was compared with a lying murderer! His heart thumped wildly as he watched her affectionately rub against Harestretch. Had the world gone mad? He gawped in silence at the love they held. A sudden pang of pain struck him again; why couldn't that love be his?
As Gorsethorn wailed silently, celebrations began on the cloud. More lights shot into the sky, and what living cats would call shooting stars darted across the indigo. The spirits danced and enjoyed their afterlife, for they and they alone knew of its delicacy. Friendships were reunited, lovers were infused, and a single heart was broken - but where one door closes, a window opens.
Note: Very, very short and rubbish one-shot. I just thought the StarClan board looked a little empty. xD I made a cute little mini-banner for it, too. xP If you're going to review, remember that is was 6AM when I wrote this.
