We all want so much to be the ideal spouse, or father, or mother, or sibling, or friend, that we get angry when someone hints we may not be, for we are so afraid that what they say is true.
Fear is the root of evil
And of hate
And of anger
And of sadness
When we lose a loved one
We feel loss
Only because we are afraid
Of how much we will miss them
And the deeds they could have done
That the world is missing out on
When shouting echoes down the halls
As spouses argue angrily
They are both afraid
Afraid of what might come to be
Because they've seen all the movies
And heard all the stories
And they're afraid it will happen to them
When hate, red and fiery, burns through a person's veins
It is because he is afraid of what he may lose
Or what he has already lost
He is afraid of what he may do
But it only makes him hate more
As a man sits with his head in his hands
Trying to alleviate the rage
He is angry at her
But he knows he is more angry at himself
For succumbing to fear
He yelled because he was frightened
He knew what all good fathers should be
And he was terrified that he was not all that
And when he wasn't given an open chance to prove himself
He threw all the bad feelings on her
Willing them to go away
When guilt eats at our insides
It is because we are afraid
Of what we've done
Of what we may become
And of what may happen to us if we aren't concerned
Fear comes from the heart
Hidden inside emotions we don't even understand
It is what brings us together
Or tears us apart
It is what makes us human
Fear is the root of evil
*Disclaimer! This poem is all original, except the second stanza about losing a loved one. It is my words, but I took the ideas from the book Fahrenheit 451 and a short story (I think it was in Chicken Soup for the soul, but I'm not sure).
