There was this girl who seemed to put up a wall against everyone, and always shrink into her shell when she's around people. She always relied on the ways of communicating with others without having to talk face to face. Like her cell phone, or her laptop. She didn't even like using the phone, because then she would have to use her voice and actually hear someone on the other side talk. She liked keeping all communication down to the limits of typing.
One night she went to church, and was waiting all alone for Seekers to start. Even though some people tried to talk to her, she never usually replied or said anything much, so of course, they all went away. She didn't know that because of the way she shied away from everyone, that they were all beginning to give up on her.
It was a particularly hot, stuffy night, and she was annoyed at how her long wavy hair was getting in the way all the time. It was sticking to her neck and making her very warm. She walked to the Youth Room, where she knew had some rubber bands. It was actually nice and cool in that room, and she was about to sit down when she saw a dirty sock on the chesterfield. So much for having a rest, she thought, not caring enough to pick the sock up or asking who it belonged to. She just left the sock there and got a rubber band from the container on the DVD player, tying up her hair.
They had worship when Seekers finally started. Everyone sang loudly in the joy of God; all except her. Even though there was the powerpoint, and wonderful music, she just didn't feel like joining in. She never did.
After singing, they went outside for games and relaxing since it was such a beautiful, warm day. Everybody gathered in a circle to play 'Zip Zap Zop', but she just silently walked over to the swing set. Some people glanced over at her, but not many paid much attention to her. She sat there, not even on the swings for the sake of swinging even, and looked down at the ground. She didn't know why she felt so scared to approach people. She didn't understand how she was able to become a totally different and outgoing person when she was online or texting people. And, she was bitterly disappointed in herself, that yet again she was trapped in her own shell.
Just as she was deep in thought, a boy sat on the swing next to her.
That really surprised her. Usually nobody left their games to care about what she's doing. The last time she checked this boy was still part of the circle, enjoying their fun and games. She didn't even hear him walk over to her.
"Why don't you ever join in and have fun with us?" he asked, watching her intently.
She simply shrugged, unable to find her voice.
There was a silence. Although she felt that it was a long pause, she didn't know if it time was really passing or if it was just because of her nervousness. Then, the boy broke the silence.
"Would you rather be an egg or a potato?"
She glanced up at him in confusion, then looked back down. "What?"
"An egg is smooth and white. It's very pretty in its own way, and the shell feels hard at the touch. However, it was fragile and can easily break. Each egg is placed in a container that separates each of them, so they never come in contact with each other."
The girl thought for a moment, but she didn't see what that had to do with anything.
"And," the boy continued, "even though a potato may not look as nice or appealing as an egg, or seem to have such a hard shell around it, it doesn't break into pieces. It is stronger, so potatoes can be stacked together or put into piles."
"I don't see where you're going with this..." she mumbled, playing with her fingers.
"A potato is strong, like having strong faith in the Lord. And even though the egg looks way better and seem way harder, it can easily be crushed. I don't want you to be like the egg, having an easily crushed faith in God, or to isolate yourself from the rest of us like being in that container."
"Oh."
The boy frowned a bit, not knowing if the girl understood what he meant or not. He sighed. There was nothing he could do if what he said didn't matter to her, but at least he tried.
"There are choices in life that only you can make, but sometimes someone can give you a nudge onto the right path," he paused for another moment, wondering what else he could say. "I just hope that you won't lose faith in God."
He was about to just leave, but then thought otherwise, for all of a sudden his face brightened up and he even looked excited.
"Wait here," he said before jumping up and running off somewhere.
The girl wondered what he was up to, but didn't watch to see what he was doing. Her eyes were still downcast as she reflected on what she was just told. It was true; she was an egg. But, how could she change that?
Just then, something brightly yellow appeared right under her nose. Surprised, she almost gasped.
"Here, this daffodil is for you! May you bloom in faith like this flower!"
She traced her eyes across the beautiful flower, so luminescent and cheery. She delicately took the stem in her hand, and looked up at the boy. For once, her gaze was unwavering, but full of happiness and gratitude.
"Th-Thank you," she whispered, her eyes looked like they were shining.
"Don't thank me; praise the Lord!" the boy replied without any hesitation, a sense of pure joy radiating off of him.
"Um...can I have your e-mail and talk to you on MSN?" she asked warily.
"No."
The girl felt crushed, but...
"I would much rather talk to you in real life," he said with a grin. "Do you have time tomorrow? Let's go somewhere fun!"
Her face lit up instantly, looking back up at him. She couldn't believe that this was real, but she knew that this was no dream...
Because now she knew that God worked miracles.

Author's Notes: This was kinda random. Ok, I have this scavenger hunt at church, and this week the task was to create a story using some funny words. Here are the words: potato, church, egg, chesterfield, sock, daffodil, swing, hair, DVD, MSN, choices, rubber bands, powerpoint, cell, and praise.
See if you can find them in this story. =P I tried making sense of it all, so I hope it's ok. ^^''
